First Days in Braces: What to Expect
We know getting braces is a big step, and our team at Signature Orthodontics is here to make the experience as smooth and comfortable as possible. Here’s what you can expect on your first day, and how to care for your new braces in the days to come.
During the first few days after your braces are placed, your mouth will begin adjusting. You may notice:
- Increased Saliva: Your body may react to your new braces as “foreign objects,” causing more saliva than usual. This typically goes away within a couple of hours.
- A Strange Sensation: Your lips, cheeks, and tongue may feel unfamiliar or sensitive. It’s normal! Exploring gently with your tongue or moving your lips can help you adjust. Within a few days, your mouth will begin to feel normal again.
General Care Tips for the First Few Days
- Eating: You can eat shortly after leaving our office, but we recommend soft foods for the first few days, such as yogurt, pasta, mashed potatoes, smoothies, or soups.
- Avoid hard, crunchy, sticky, or chewy foods like popcorn, hard candies, gum, and ice. These can damage your braces and prolong your treatment time.
- Discomfort: Mild soreness is common for the first few days. Most patients do not need pain medication, but if needed, you may take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) every 6-8 hours and always consult your doctor if you have special medical conditions or take other medications.
- Irritated Cheeks: If brackets or wires irritate your cheeks, apply orthodontic wax to the area for relief. Our office provides wax at every appointment.
- Brushing and Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day, after breakfast and after dinner.
For younger patients, it’s helpful if a parent checks after brushing to make sure everything is clean. Developing good habits early makes a big difference!
The “Quick & Comfortable” Checklist
To make your orthodontic treatment as smooth and efficient as possible, follow this simple 4-point checklist at every visit:
- Wire Check: Use your tongue to check for any wires poking out that may cause irritation. Let us know right away if you feel anything uncomfortable.
- Instructions Check: Following your orthodontist’s instructions is crucial. Whether it’s wearing elastics, adjusting an expander, or cleaning a certain way; these steps keep your treatment moving forward.
- Supply Check: Before leaving, make sure you have all necessary supplies such as dental wax and rubber bands.
- Appointment Check: Always schedule your next appointment before leaving the office. Delaying appointments can extend your overall treatment time.
