Once orthodontic treatment is complete, a retainer is worn for a period of time, usually just at night. The retainer helps maintain the new smile and also allows for small adjustments if needed, once the braces have been removed.
Dr. Mozafari will review the options with you and provide specific instructions on the use of your retainers.

Types of Retainers
Traditional retainers, also known as Hawley retainers, are classic and widely used removable orthodontic retainers designed to maintain the position of teeth after braces are removed. It consists of a metal wire thats sits across the front teeth and is anchored to an acrylic base that rests against the roof of the mouth (upper retainer) or along the inside of the lower jaw (lower retainer).
Clear (Essix) Retainers Clear retainers, also known as Essix retainers, are made from a thin, transparent plastic that fits snugly over your teeth. These are custom-made to maintain the position of your teeth after orthodontic treatment. They are virtually invisible, comfortable to wear, and easy to remove for eating and cleaning. Essix retainers are a popular choice for patients who want a discreet and effective way to preserve their beautiful smile.
Fixed retainers, also known as bonded or permanent retainers, are thin wires that are discreetly bonded to the back of the teeth, most commonly the lower front teeth to help maintain alignment after orthodontic treatment. Because they stay in place at all times, fixed retainers offer consistent support and are pretty effective in preventing shifting in areas prone to relapse.
Things to Remember
Offering superior convenience and ease of maintenance, removable retainers are easily removed while eating and brushing your teeth. Just remember to keep them in their case so they don’t go missing!
The teeth bonded to fixed retainers require additional oral hygiene care to ensure optimal oral health. Dr. Mozafari recommends using floss threaders to pass dental floss through the small spaces between the retainer and the teeth.
